This is Chad Harrison and you're listening to Hope Applying God's word to your daily life.
Hi, this is Chad Harrison and I am the teaching pastor of Lake Community Church and have been serving as a pastor for 25 years.
I'm also a practicing attorney. This podcast is designed to help you study God's word and find God's will for your life.
I pray in the name of Jesus right now that God would open up his word to you and allow you to see him and to know him and to know his will, that you might glorify him and that you might walk in faith and power each and every day,
especially today in Jesus name.
Good morning. Welcome to Lake Community Church's morning Bible study. We are in Deuteronomy 28, Deuteronomy 28,
and verses 1 through 14. This is the blessings.
Remember, they're on the Mount Gerizing. They're on Mount Ebal. There six tribes on each side and they're pronouncing blessings and cursings.
And, and the blessings that come from obedience is, is where we're at as far as the scripture passage this morning.
And, and I think it's really cool how it starts. It says, now it shall come to pass.
Notice God is desirous that people walk in his blessings. He is.
He wants you to be able to walk in those blessings. That's how he operates. That's who he is.
He knows that sin is a curse unto itself and that the natural state of humanity after the fall is to be under the curse, is under the curse of sin.
Bible says in Hebrews that through one man death enters, entered the world.
And so he understands that, that the very beginning started it out. And we've been bound up by our sin ever since. God desires for us not to be bound in it, to walk in his blessings.
And so he says, now shall come to pass if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God. Now,
when we hear the word obey,
what we. What we think of oftentimes is just to do what he says.
And, and there, there's some depth to that. And it's more, it's more than that.
God wants obey him because we've heard him, we believe him, we trust him, and we want to walk in what he says.
Obedience just for obedience sake. Meaning obedience just to do what exactly, I'm told removes the,
it removes the relationship.
It does.
You know when, when, when you're parenting a child and you have to tell the child, do it because I told you to. So that may Be important at some point, sometimes very important, sometimes because it might be the child's in danger.
You do what you're told because you're told. But you don't want that relationship. You don't want the child,
the child's interaction with you. As far as your instructions, how you would raise them, how you want them to live. You don't want that interaction with that child to be based off of just because I told you so.
You want that interaction to be based off of them hearing you,
understanding you,
knowing what's going on and acting because they trust you.
And that's that, that, that context has a relationship. Now, sure,
when you say, get back over here, and it's because you know they're doing something that's dangerous,
you want them to obey because they heard your voice and they did it. But that obedience comes from.
That type of obedience is born of a trust.
That type of obedience is born of a relationship that exists there. And when they hear that voice, when they hear the tone of that voice, they act.
Well, you can hear the tone of voice of God in your heart. You definitely can.
And certain things are just not worth doing. They're not worth being a part of.
And so if you,
if you, if you hear God's voice and act upon it, and he says, if you observe carefully all his commandments, which I command you today,
that the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. What he's saying is, I'm going to give you a special place. You're getting honored position.
You're a special people to me.
And he says that in the Old Testament to the Jews, he says that New Testament to believers, he. He says,
you are his treasured possession.
You are the one who he longed and desired to have as His.
And he says,
if you will be walking that diligent faith,
that faith that's born.
I mean that obedience that's born of faith. I do what God says because I trust him. And if you're going to be that treasure possession, all the blessings shall come upon you and overtake you because you obey the voice of the Lord your God.
Notice the blessings. As I'm walking through life, they're coming and they're overtaking me. They slow and, you know, that's a really cool way for God to say that.
And it really is true. As you walk with God, as you try to walk in his will and his way,
blessings overcome you and overtake you. And some of them, you don't even realize they're there. Until they're.
They're actually just totally a part of your life. You don't realize that there's the hope and joy and some of the things that happen that you didn't expect to be the.
To be there, to be that to be the case.
You didn't expect that to take place. And you didn't even really know what was going on. And then all of a sudden, it just kind of overwhelms you. It overtakes you.
Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the country. Now, notice that it's not just a blessing when I show up to church. It's not just a blessing in certain situations.
You. You're blessed all the time. You're blessed everywhere you're at.
And, and you. You will. You're. You're blessed because.
Because you have trusted him, because you have a righteousness that's born of faith. Notice what else he says.
Blessed shall you shall be. Blessed shall be the fruit of your body, the produce of your ground, and the increase of your herds. Notice, he says, your children,
your crops and your herds, they're going to be blessed. The increase of your cattle and offspring of your flocks. He says, you're going to be blessed in all kinds of ways.
And, and let me tell you something. There is a. There is a un. There's. There's an inability to identify the blessings that come to my children,
to my. To. To my grandchildren because of my obedience to God in my life as I walk through it. Now, remember, we're not saying you're perfect. We're just saying that you're walking in obedience to God's will and God's way,
and you're learning how to do that. There's a blessing that comes to your children and your grandchildren for that.
There's a great blessing that comes to them,
and you don't even realize that. And then obviously for them,
they were forming.
They were going to be a farming society. He's going to bless the production of their. Of their lives, what. What they worked on to add increase to their family. He's saying, I'm gonna bless your children and I'm gonna bless your work.
Blessed shall I be the basket and your kneading bowl.
What he's saying is, we'll fill them up. I'm gonna fill you up with. You have plenty to eat. And you know, for me, I like that.
He says, you're gonna have plenty to eat. Blessed shall you be you when you come in and blessed when you go out. Notice God,
you, everywhere you go, when you come and go,
his blessing is following you there, you know, there. There's. There is a. There is a. A.
There's an anointing. There's a power.
There's a presence that goes with you and comes with you. When you're, when you're walking with God.
It. It is in. In. And. And the more you do it, and the more you do it well with expectation of big things,
the more it happens around you. It doesn't have to be forced. It just comes.
It doesn't have to be.
It doesn't have to. It's not a thing that has to be produced. It just naturally, innately comes.
He says, the Lord will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated before your face. They shall come out against you on one way. One way and flee before you seven ways.
He says he's going to scatter them like,
like a flock.
He. He's. He's. He's scattering the enemies around. You notice. Are you scattering the enemies? No. God is.
Notice these blessings.
God said in the curses are cursed. And all God's people said amen. The blessings here, you don't even have to say Amen to him. He. He knows.
He. He knows that they're going to come on you and you're not even going to realize it till you're right in the midst of these blessings. He says, these blessings are going to rise up and overwhelm you.
They're going to. They're going to come walking in my way. You. They're coming around you and you're not even going to realize it. He says, the Lord will establish you as a holy people to himself,
just as he sworn to you if you keep the commandments of the Lord your God and walk in his ways. He said, I'm going to make you holy to myself that all the peoples of the earth shall see you are called by my name of the Lord, and they shall be afraid of you.
And for that,
that time and even today is important.
He says, and the Lord will grant you plenty of goods, the fruit of your body and the increase of your livestock, and in the produce of your ground in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers to give you.
Verse 12. The Lord will open to you his good treasure the heavens, to give the rain to your land and in its season, and to bless you with the work of your hand.
You shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. Now that's something that we need to really look at as a nation, right There, it's a blessing to be able to lend and not have to borrow.
And he says, and the Lord will make you the head and not the tail, you shall.
This is, this is a passage that's actually quoted many times to, to, to identify what a blessed nation is.
And, and he says, he says, I'm going to bless you. I'm going to take care of the, I'm going to take care of the weather. I'm going to take care of the produce of your hand.
I'm going to make sure that you,
you are a lender and you're not a, you're not a borrower. And the Lord will make you the head, not the tail. You shall be above only and not beneath notice.
You're going to be on top. That's what he says.
If you heed the commandments of the Lord your God, if you listen to what God says, and your obedience and your obedient, not just for obedience sake, your obedience. Because you trust God, you hear his voice, you believe him, and you act about it,
he says, and careful to observe them. Be careful to do what God's asked you to do. Act upon it, act upon it, act upon it. So you shall not turn aside from any of the words which I command you this day to the right or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.
What he's saying is, if you do this, you're going to be blessed.
Now we're going to go into all how that works out. And this is a long, long chapter. It's a long chapter in the book of Deuteronomy,
but it's, and it's dealing with how those blessings and how those cursings work themselves out. And you know, really, we need to, we need to take this as our as, as,
as, as something that's important, that speaks. It speaks from literally 3,500 years ago. It speaks out of history,
out of God's word, out of time.
It speaks to us and says, you know, I'm promising you these things. And everything that every promise that God makes in his covenant with his people is fulfilled in his covenant with his son, King Jesus, on the cross with us.
And so I can draw from every one of these promises, all the promises of the Old Testament, they're true for me too also, because Jesus is the culmination of all the covenant relationships.
He's the culmination of all the covenants.
And so I need to walk in these promises.
I need to expect God to give me those things. I need to expect God to live up to what he says.
If I will hear his voice, believe him, trust him.
As you go today I pray that the Lord will bless you and keep you, that he'll make his face to shine upon you and that he will give you hope and peace today in Jesus name.
