Hope Alive: Applying God’s Word to Your Daily Life
1 Corinthians 10:29-33 + 11:1-16
I am Chad Harrison, and I am the teaching pastor of Lake Community Church and had been serving as a pastor for 25 years. I'm also a practicing attorney. This podcast is designed to help you study God's word and find God's will for your life. The purpose of studying scripture is that you might know the character of Jesus Christ, and that you might see the world from the Father's perspective. That you gain wisdom that changes your life. I pray in the name of Jesus right now that God would open His word to you and allow you to see Him and to know Him. To know His will, that you might glorify Him and that you might walk in faith and power each day, especially today. In Jesus name.

This is Chad Harrison and you're listening to Hope.
Applying God's word to your daily life.
As we finish Faithful Finance, we want to produce our winter Bible study done at Lake Community Church on First Corinthians.
It'll be a fairly long Bible study.
We will break it up into different parts and so you will get a really good, really fast study through the book of First Corinthians before we move on to the book of Joshua.
He says,
conscious. I say, not your own, but that of the other.
For why is my liberty judged by another man's conscience? What he's saying is you,
your conscience should be clear. What you need to be doing is worrying about them.
But if I partake with thanks,
why am I evil spoken of? For the food over which I've given thanks.
He says, if I have to give thanks for it, and I'm doing rightly by it,
what's wrong with that?
He says, therefore, whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
And how do I glorify God as New Testament Christian?
I love God with everything.
I love my neighbor as myself and I love each other as Jesus Christ loved me self sacrificially.
I'm going to tell you that share was terrible.
But that woman wanted me to drink two glasses of it and made sure she watched me drink it. I think she still wasn't sure.
Where did they find an orthodox 6 foot 4 white boy from Alabama? You know what I'm talking about? I think she said, I'm not sure that was orthodox.
You're gonna have to drink that wine. That sherry make me feel right.
It was a lot of fun.
Give no offense either to the Jew or to the Greek or to the church of God. What he's saying is, quit offending people with your religiousness.
Just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of many that they may be saved.
What he's saying is,
learn what reaches them.
Now he says, imitate me as I imitate Christ.
Now we're going to get to one of the hardest passages in scripture, okay?
One of especially for Americans.
And all of us are Americans,
right?
America,
all of us.
But I'm going to read this to you and I'm going to tell you that we don't really know what he's talking about because he's talking about some cultural thing that.
Listen, you can hear people tell you all the time,
okay,
that they know what the cultural thing is. But there is no written evidence of what the culture he's speaking of is,
okay?
But especially in the south, it's huge. And we've got somebody here. Well, we've got somebody here who's breaking this rule,
okay?
And it's not Mike.
You with me?
It's all you women.
All right? He says,
but the ones we get onto are the young men.
I don't understand it.
Listen to what he says. Now, I praise you, brethren,
that you remember me in all things and keep the traditions just as I've delivered them to you. What he's saying is, I'm praising you that y' all are doing exactly what I taught you to do.
Isn't that what he's saying?
And he's using the word tradition.
Now, in some churches, tradition is as important as the cross,
okay? In other churches, tradition, we just throw them away because we don't like them.
We just recklessly abandon. Throw them away. Listen, a tradition in a church usually surrounds at some point in time, a movement of God,
okay?
And they're important.
A tradition that is based off of something that happened in the church that was God is a good thing.
You keep doing it,
it's like a standing stone. You remember what God did.
A tradition that you don't know why you're doing it has lost its meaning,
okay?
Now, you need to hear that it's lost its meaning. It doesn't have the value it used to. Why? Because you're keeping the tradition for no reason.
If you said to me, pastor, we do this for this reason and it reminds us of this, then I would say,
you need to keep doing it.
Right?
You do.
But if you say, well, this is just the way we've always done it, that's not good enough.
Paul's telling them, I gave you a bunch of things that I said it'd be best if y' all did it this way.
He's saying, y' all do it this way.
And he's praising them. He is.
But I want you to know,
now, he's gonna get into it, and then he's gonna. He's gonna explain it in its fullness. At the end,
he's gonna give them spiritual understandings,
and he's going to go both ways.
He says, but I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ.
Right?
The head of every man is Christ,
the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. What he's saying is, I'm giving you authorities.
God,
Christ,
man,
woman.
Now, listen to me.
He's not saying any of any of them's lesser,
God is above Christ. But who has the name greater than God?
Christ.
He has the name that's greater than any name.
But who's the head?
God's the head.
Look,
somebody has to be the head.
Somebody has to be the leader.
And we've neutered men in, in America's church and not forced them to take on the role that they should take on, which is the leader.
They're not the leader of their household, they're not the leader of the church, they're not leaders in community. And I'm not saying that,
that, that ought to be to the detriment of any woman.
I'm just saying we have men that aren't leaders at all.
We have 35 year old men still living with their parents.
Am I right?
Look, you got to figure out how to. You got you, you got to find your way.
And our society has done that. And I want you to hear me. It's important that we help figure that out.
And you can't do that without figuring out the authorities that are in scripture.
He says every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered dishonors his head.
Now I want you to hear me.
He is talking about some cultural thing that was going on there and I'm gonna prove it to you at the end.
Okay?
But he, he was saying, I gave you these traditions.
Now I'm telling you,
due to something that was their culture.
If you pray in church, you shouldn't be wearing a hat.
Mike, you don't pray over church. So you can wear you at. Okay,
just. I'm picking at you.
No, you don't. I know when you pray, you do.
That's exactly. There we go. All right.
But every woman who prays or prophesies now notice what is he saying a woman can do?
Isn't that what he's saying?
He's not saying that you can't.
He's saying that you can, but you got your heavy head covered.
I can't tell you how many times this just really disturbed folks. When I was in, in, in,
in my original denomination, I'd have a woman come up and say,
especially my youth pastor.
They'd come up to me and say, why you got them boys wearing hats in church? And I'd say, why ain't you wearing a hat?
And they looked like, they looked at me like I was crazy as I'll get out. I said, well, where does that come from?
You need to figure that out.
Because if you're going to get on these boys and that don't really know Jesus or know anything else and run them out of church because they're wearing hats.
Well,
the passage you got that from means, you better be having a hat on. I'm going to tell you, my wife ain't wearing a hat. You know how I know she ain't wearing a hat?
It messes up her hair.
But I know it farther than that.
That woman had stage three breast cancer and took the worst drugs I could think of.
She didn't have no hair. At one point in time, she still wouldn't wear a hat. And I bought three nice ones for her. She wouldn't wear them.
So if we're going to follow this by the law,
then Kathleen gonna have to start wearing a hat.
So we know it's not talking about that.
He says, but every woman who prays and prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head. For this is one and the same as if her head were shaved,
which he's really carrying it to its bitter end with them. He's saying, this is the culture you're in,
and if the women are not going to cover their heads, they might as well just shave them. Well, you know they ain't doing that,
right.
I had the honor of shaving Kathleen's head.
She's got a nice little head on top.
She don't have any creases or anything. All right,
very round.
But if it's shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be covered,
he says, for the man indeed should not cover his head since he is the image and the glory of God, but woman is the glory of man. Now, notice, woman glorifies man, man glorifies the Father.
Now you get you going. Well, that means women are less. No, he's fixing to explain to you that they're not.
He's just saying you need to understand authorities.
And a woman who doesn't have the covering of a godly man needs to be in the church, where she can have the covering of the church.
And godly men need to be under the covering of Christ, which means they need to be under the covering of the church. So they both need to be under the same covering.
Right.
He says,
nor was man for man is not from woman, but woman for man.
Nor was man created for women, but woman for the man.
And she was to be his helpmate. And we sure do need it.
Don't get it. Let it go to your head tonight. Okay? But.
But I say it all the time.
I say it all the Time, young man. Somebody say, well, my son. My son got married to this girl, and she's just making him do all kinds of stuff. And I'm just.
I say, well, pre probably needed it. I ain't gonna lie to you. But she probably make him take a bath and, you know, pick up his stuff and all that kind of stuff.
Ain't nothing wrong with it. Just let him do it. Let her do it. She's doing.
You know, they do domesticate us.
Do you know that, Tim?
They do. They domesticate us.
He says, nevertheless, neither is man independent of woman nor woman independent of man in the Lord. What he's saying, just because we got this hierarchy, just because we have this structure, doesn't mean that we're independent of each other.
We need each other.
For a woman came from man.
Even so man also comes through women.
But all things are from God. What he's saying is, if you say, well, woman was made for man and woman came from man,
every man ever been born came from a woman.
So he's saying, we need each other.
Judge among yourselves. Now, notice he's giving them the idea to judge it because he is speaking to their culture.
He says, judge among yourselves.
Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered?
Did I miss 10? 11.
For this reason, the woman ought to have a symbol of authority or ought to have authority on her head because of the angels.
Because the angels are under authority. You need to hear this. And this is really, really important to understand.
Angels are.
Are an army.
They function as an army.
And the different types of angels are ranks of angels.
They're literal military ranks,
thrones, principalities, arch.
We battle not against flesh and blood, but against powers principalities, rulers of this dark age. Powers, principalities, rulers are ranks of angels. Arch,
cherubs, seraphs. There's like nine of them mentioned in Scripture. Ranks.
Okay?
They're in ranks.
What? So when Lucifer fell, the third of the angelic hosts that were under him fell also.
Okay.
And none of the archangels are over the other one.
So when they. When. When.
When Michael argued with Lucifer over Moses body.
He didn't argue that. I'm fixing to whoop you. Because he could have, because Michael is the. Is the warrior archangel.
Okay. And Lucifer is the worship archangel.
And have y' all ever bet met a band member that can whoop the starting linebacker? No.
Have you?
Okay, well, maybe. So your side play drums? He played the drums. Maybe. Maybe he could.
Well, I just use that illustration. Just throw it out there. But the whole point is is that they're under authority.
The angels are under th under authority, and they operate under authority.
And so if the angels have authority, shouldn't you have authority also?
Yeah,
you should understand authorities,
and you ought to understand your authority.
And by the way, the minute you are start acting rightly under your authority,
you give God the room in your life to fix any problems with your authorities that might be there if you don't,
and you whine and complain and I think about doing this, I'm thinking about doing that. I hear that all the time.
You've totally taken God out of it.
You're not letting God be lord of that area of your life, and so you're going to be miserable in it.
Where were we at verse 11?
Nevertheless, neither is man independent of woman nor woman independent of man in the Lord. For as woman came from man, even so man also comes from woman through woman.
But all things are from God. Judge among yourselves. Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head covered, uncovered? Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair,
it is a dishonor to him?
What he's explained to him is that you need to look around you and see what's going on. And he uses nature as an example here.
But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her,
for her hair is given to her as for a covering.
Now, here's the key verse here that lets you know that he's explaining something that we don't understand.
But if anyone seems to be contentious,
we have no such custom.
Nor do the churches of God.
Do you see what he's saying?
He's saying, but if y' all are arguing about it, and you want to say, this is the way it's supposed to be, this nor do any other churches.
So y' all are arguing over something that nobody else is arguing over.
And you're causing contention and division in your church because you're arguing about something. That's not a problem.
But if you're going to argue about it,
I'm going to give you some understanding.
What is he telling them literally in verse 16?
Stop arguing about that.
He gave them some spiritual understanding, gave him some scriptural understanding, and then he said, quit arguing about it. Now, I'm going to tell you about half the time when I'm dealing with a problem in the church.
The first thing I do is tell them what Scripture says about generally about that matter.
And you can watch them while I'm talking to them. They don't want to hear that.
And then usually I tell them.
Usually I tell them. But you know what? That doesn't really matter. And then I use scripture to tell them why it don't matter. And then I tell them to quit acting that way toward each other.
And then they really don't like it.
Well, that's what Paul just did,
you know, because people show do love to be right and to fight.
The Bible says have nothing to do with a contentious man.
You need to hear that.
If all you Lewin's looking for a fight don't have anything to do with them.
That's an important understanding.
As you go. Today, I pray that the Lord will bless you and keep you,
that he'll make his face to shine upon you, and that he will give you hope and peace today in Jesus name.
