This is Chad Harrison, and you're listening to Hope Applying God's word to your daily life. Hi, this is Chad Harrison, and I am the teaching pastor of Lake Community Church and have been serving as a pastor for 25 years. I'm also a practicing attorney. This podcast is designed to help you study God's word and find God's will for your life. I pray in the name of Jesus right now that God would open up.
His word to you and allow you.
To see him and to know him and to know his will, that you might glorify him and that you might walk in faith and power each and every day, especially today in Jesus name.
All right, we're in chapter 14, verse 6. What's neat about this chapter? And when I say neat, it is a transitional chapter. And the way you know it's transitional is because all the action that is taking place after the 144, after we see in the first part of the chapter, the 144,000, which are the ones who are preaching the gospel. The 144,000, once they go off the stage, once we see them in heaven, and that's what's going on there. Once that happens, things change, okay? And when I say they change, some people don't like the term dispensationalism, okay, or the word dispensations. But when you're studying prophecy in the revelation, that term will be used. And it's. It's. It's a idea that. That God operates under separate dispensations during the time. During the different time periods of his creation, okay? Now, you don't have to necessarily believe in dispensationalism. It's not one of those things that is a hill to die on or even necessary. And you don't even have to use the phraseology. But we do know that God dealt with people differently during different time periods. When man was first created on the earth, man lived for a long, long time. If you go through the first genealogy, I mean, you have people living 6, 7, 800 years, okay? And then God says his spirit would not strive with man forever. What he's saying is, they're not going to live that long. And he cut the number of years down to 120. And then later on, we see that he cuts the years down to 70. That would be a different time period. I mean, that would be a different way of dealing with people. We know that before the flood and after the flood, there was different ways God dealt with them. He said no longer would he destroy the earth with a flood. So that's a different dispensation. Now you could also say that when you're studying scripture that God's dealing with humanity also would change based off of the covenants, okay? And those covenants are very important because the five covenants of the Old Testament are all fulfilled and carried out to their fullest in the new covenant of the New Testament, okay? But the way God deals with people is different. The Adamic covenant, which would be the covenant God made with Adam and Eve in the garden, the promise that there would be redemption for their falling. He's going to deal with man different. He no longer walks with them in the cool of the evening. He no longer has access to them, okay? After that, they're going to have to labor in the fields. They're going to have to do different things. So that would be two different. If you were using the phrase the word dispensation, that'd be two different dispensations, right? And then you've got the no attic covenant where he destroys the earth and destroys the human population on the earth, okay? And there's only eight left. And by the way, we all know that almost every major. Almost and really probably could use the word all, but all major civilizations have a flood narrative, have a flood story, okay? And we're talking about North America, South America, Asia, Africa, Europe, all, all have them, okay? Even the, even the, even the, the native people in Australia, they all have a flood narrative, okay? In their history or in the. Even if they don't have a written history, in their oral history, okay? So we know that that was a different dealing with man back then. And we know that human beings, that human beings were then treated as people groups and tribes and nations rather than just, you know, they're all the same. We know that God's dealing with humanity would have been different before the Tower of Babel and after the Tower of Babel, okay? Because if everybody speaks the same language, that's a whole different way of dealing with the world than there being a multitude of languages based off of your, you know, where you're from and your nationality and your ethnic group, okay? That would all change. Change. And so as you're going through all the, you know, the Abrahamic covenant, all of a sudden now he's going to make a promise of presenting a nation that is going to, going to be the source of his plan worked out, and it's going to be culminated in Jesus Christ. You go through all those things, they're different ages, okay? And the Critical age, the one that God plan is the church age, okay? And that age, that age begins at the resurrection, okay. And it's very critical that you see it that way, okay? The, the oftentimes people say the world changed at the cross. The world didn't really change at the cross in the sense of, of a permanent fix. Okay? The payment was made, but the overcoming sin and death was not done. Okay? He had to resurrect himself in order for that to be the case. And that's clearly what Romans and Hebrews teaches. Okay? And so when we're thinking through these things, the empty tomb is the turning point or the different age. And you say, well, what is the difference between the that age and the Old Testament age? Well, in the Old Testament, God would send his message by angels and by prophets, okay? And that's how he got his word out. And some of it was written down. What he said was written down. And it was written by, you know, from. And by the way, Moses is called the prophet. Okay. All right. And so why is he the prophet? Well, he's relating God's word, he's relating spiritual truths. Okay. And so even though he's not predicting the future, he is prophesying, which is to relate spiritual truths, which may include predicting the future. That makes sense. All right, so understanding that's important. What is the difference? Well, the difference is that God no longer deals with people by nation groups and people groups or even a nation itself. He deals with human beings individually because now he indwells them. Okay? Now there's some critical stuff that goes on from the moment Jesus enters the upper room until Pentecost. And understanding the work of the Holy Spirit that Jesus predicted to Nicodemus in John chapter three. Okay? And you see him operating in that. When he enters in the upper room, what does he do for them to receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit? He breathes on them and he says, receive ye the Holy Spirit. The same thing he did in the garden when he formed Adam out of the dust of the ground. He formed him out of the dust of the ground. He breathed into him the ruha, the spirit of God, and he became a living being or a living soul. Okay? And so you have that. And then in the upper room after the resurrection, you have him breathing on them and having them receive the Holy Spirit, okay? And so that indwelling of the Holy Spirit and that new, new human spirit that is born again as a result of that causes a different age to take place. Okay? And we know it as the church age. All right? Now obviously, if you remove the church, then the church age is what? Over? Okay? But God's message of grace is from Genesis 1 to the end, there is a message of grace all the time, okay? There's always a message of grace. Now, how God's dealing with humanity and how that message is presented is different, okay? It is different. And if you remove the church, then he's got to be able to present his message to the people of the earth. But he doesn't have anybody who's got the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. And he doesn't have. He's removed 144,000 Jewish preachers or Jewish prophets, okay? So he's no longer speaking through the tongues of men. All right, so how is he relating his message now? Well, he's relating his message solely by the angels, okay? And that's what we see happen. Once those 144,000 pastors are gone or preachers are gone or prophets are gone, you can use all that terminology, okay? And, and it's good to think of things that way. It's good to use that. We use the term pastor because the church needs shepherds. That's, that's. That's the, that's the, the idea. And by the way, that idea in the New Testament, that office in the New Testament is trans. Is. Is. Is expressed in about five terms. Pastor, shepherd, bishop, presbyter, and elder. Okay? And there may be one more. And you go, well, how do you know that that's what that is? Well, because as you read through the New Testament, he'll speak of that position, and he'll use two or three of those terms interchangeably. Okay? What I mean by that? Well, if you pulled them all out and you looked at him, you go, oh, when he's using these five terms, he's talking about one position, but he may be talking about also. Also the gifting of the person, which can be different. Okay? How that gifting takes place and how that gifting operates may be different. Somebody might be different, you know, an evangelist and a pastor. Somebody might be a really good shepherd and prophet, you know? Are you following me? He may be an elder, meaning he's a really good administrator. He's one who is a great leader, okay? And. And how, how those things operate and how those things work out. One of the. One of the. One of the terms used for it is pastor, teacher, okay? And by the way, that's being able to teach is one of the. One of the prescribed gifts or, or. Or one of the attributes of that office as spelled out in First Timothy. Okay? And. And you need to now remember, we believe the whole word of God. Okay? A high view of scripture. I want you to hear that over and over again, okay? We have a very high view of scripture and I want you to listen to me. It's not your. It ain't got nothing to do with how you was raised. Okay? All right. Your traditions don't mean anything here at this church. Are you with me? Now, they may be special to you. They may be something that's important for your own spiritual walk, but they do not regulate what we do and how we do things. We do things from the scripture. You following me? Period. Because all churches that wander from the scripture usually split and die, okay? And we've had enough of it now that we can see the pattern. Are you with me? It's. It's a. It's a well worn pattern. And it started. It started with the Presbyterians and then it went to the Episcopalians and. And then you have the Methodist, and. And sadly, there's groups that are heading that way themselves. And what's the problem? Well, they just deny. Deny the. The word of God. Okay? And if you deny the word of God, you're on a path. You're on it. You're on a devastating path. I don't know why I'm telling you that, but it's important that you hear that, okay? We believe in the word of God, period. And we're going to teach and preach the Word of God, period. Unashamedly, boldly, because it's. It's the good news. Okay? All right? So he says then another angel flying in the midst of the heaven, having ever having the everlasting gospel, this verse 6, to preach to those who dwell on the earth, to every nation, tribe, tongue and people. And we talked about that last week a little bit. Notice who is relating the good news now? The angels. Is that uncommon? No, it's not uncommon. The angels have been. In fact, the word angel means what messenger? Okay, so it's not uncommon that. That be the case. All right? Angels are ministering, spirits sent to minister under the saints of God. I want you to hear me. The ministry, the primary ministry that angels have is the word of God. So the greatest ministry to the human, the human condition is the word of God. Listen to me. The greatest ministry to the human condition is the Word of God. We are not ashamed of the gospel. We are not ashamed of the Word of God. Now, we don't have to be judgmental and we don't have to be ugly about it, but we're also not going to back off of it. And I've been put in that position many, many times as a pastor. Well, Pastor, what do you think about that? Well, I'll tell them, well, we love you. We love everybody, but we go by what the word says. I sat in a car not too long ago with somebody. They were trying to across a bridge when it was icy. And. And I had already knew too many people tried to cross that bridge when it wasn't icy and get killed. All right? And so I was asked a question about something that was theological, you know, And I said, we believe. You need to hear me. I teach the Bible, okay? And. And so there's no. There's no. We don't. There's no. I don't know. I don't know what I'd say. There's no equivocation about that, okay? We don't equivocate. The Gospel of Jesus Christ, all right? He says here, saying with a loud voice, fear God. Fear God. The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom or understanding. Okay? Meaning, what are you talking about? Well, it's a understanding of who God is and who you're not. Right? Y' all remember I've been talking last couple weeks when I. When I'm not sure what the answer is, I always go back to the basics. And what's the basics? God is God. He's sovereign. Okay? Well, by the way, that's the beginning. He's in control. He's in charge. He decides. I have a great fear of him, okay? A reverence for his position. All right? That's. That's. That's the beginning spot, all right? Now, once I leave that spot, if I leave properly from that spot, everything makes sense eventually, okay? If I don't leave from that spot, nothing makes sense. You need to hear that nothing makes sense. You can't. Logically, you. If you leave that place, you can't logically understand God's plan there. It just. It just mess. It just gets all bumfuzzled. It just does. It just. It don't work, okay? And that's why when you have these churches that begin to deny aspects of God's word. Are you following me? All right, Then. Then you get in some bad territory, okay? And you can come up with reasons why you want to trim it off. Are you with me? I don't trim any of it off. Are you following me? And when I say that, I don't really. I'll tell you that there's, that there's 40 sections, mainly verses, that have some question as to whether or not they have parts of them in them or not. None of them change any of the major theological understandings of Scripture. But there are some. I tend to take those fully and completely. I don't cut them out. Are you with me? In fact, the first part of the last chapter of John, chapter eight, there's a question whether or not he had. Whether or not John actually wrote the story of the woman caught in adultery. Did y' all know that? I think I said it the first time. Of course. I know. It was like a year and a half ago when I said it, but I think I brought it up. Okay, all right, now here, here's the, here's the issue. Does it fit perfectly in what was written? Yes. Does the Holy Spirit decide what makes it to us? Sure he does. Remember, where did I. Where did I. Where we start God's sovereign, right. He's in charge. He controls those things. Okay. I hear people say, well, that book was taken out of the Bible. No, it wasn't taken out of the Bible. Never was in the Bible. If it was going to be in the Bible, it got to us. I know he loves me enough to give me his unadulterated word. Are you following me in this? I know it. He sent his son to a cross to make sure I got it. Are you following me? So I don't, I don't see if you can get there and you can equivocate all you want to. Are you following me into Mark? The last few verses of Mark. There's question mark. Some, some of the manuscripts back dating back to the first and second century have it, some don't. I tend to keep it. Okay? I, I, I, I don't, I don't get rid of it. It doesn't really change anything in, in the sense of. It doesn't, doesn't add to or take away from, from our theological understanding of God. All right? When these angels speak, they speak a message. Okay? All right. You need to hear this about the revelation of God. There are three. Three primary ways. And I say it all the time, but I got to get it across to you because you, it helps you. It helps you when you are dealing with God. It helps you understand. Okay, how do I do this? All right. The first revelation is it's. He is clearly seen and what he made. Okay? So there's some blessed assurance that goes with, I can see the sunset, I can see the rain. I can see the animals. I can see the trees. I can see. I can see the orderliness of God's creation. And I know that he is. He's not only a creator, but he's a mighty creator and a good creator. Make sense? All right, that is general revelation spelled out in the Old Testament, codified really well at the end of Romans chapter one. All right? The second revelation is the revelation of God by his Son through the Word. John said in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And. And then verse 14, he says in the Word became flesh made to dwell in among us. All right? So the Word of God is the specific full revelation of God's will and God's plan. All right? Now the final revelation kind of deals with you and you listening to God. And, you know, we've got to have ears to hear and eyes to see, and some of us don't have ears to hear and some of us don't have eyes to see. And even the ones that we do don't work real well, right? And that is. That's personal revelation. But that personal revelation must come from the Word of God. I want you to hear this because it's really important, all right? Y' all know I don't teach from notes, right? Okay, I want you to hear me. But, you know, people say, well, you know, you keep all this. They come up with all this stuff. Okay? I want you to hear me. I want you to hear me on this. There is an attractiveness for those who are born again when a person genuinely believes and richly knows and passionately expresses the Word of God, okay? It's just attractive to the. To the. To the born again, okay? It just is, all right? If you know it and they know you believe it and you passionately express it, it's attractive. Ain't got nothing to do with me. It's got everything to do with what God does. Okay? But if you don't believe it, you don't really know it. You're not passionately about. You're not passionate about it. Well, you're boring or you're worse. Are you following me? Yeah. It's important that you understand that. And why. Why am I telling you that? Because it is of the utmost importance. You understand that what happens here is a combining of a full expression and belief in God's Word and the Holy Spirit revealing it. Okay? When that happens, well, the kingdom is built. When it does not happen, well, churches die, okay? So if I show up to a church and they're Questioning some aspect of God's word or they're outright teaching something or trying to waver on something that's quite clear in scripture. That's a problem. It going to smell like death to you eventually or you're not born again. Sorry. Just is. When these angels speak, they're speaking to those who are going to be redeemed. Those who are not, I want you to hear me, are going to hell. All right? By the way, that's one of the things that we'll start cutting out, right? We're going to start cutting. The main thing. We're going to cut out hell, right? If we get that out, we probably can do this thing pretty easy, right? But the problem is, if I remove hell, I remove the holiness of God. If I remove the holiness of God, then I remove his perfection. If I remove his perfection, then he did not make this universe, because this universe is perfectly made. Don't you hear me? If he didn't make the universe, he ain't got. And the high 70% of Presbyterian preachers didn't believe in hell. The low 70% of Methodist preachers didn't believe in hell. And dying. Do you. Age by it? First one were the pistols. They could. By the way, for all you who so proud of your other heritage, 50% of Baptist preachers didn't believe in hell 20 years ago. You know that. No, ma', am, they don't. That's a. That's a false statement. In fact, one of their five seminaries quite clearly teaches against it today. Just letting you know. Just letting you know, okay. There's a reason why God's moved away from those things. Just being honest with you. And, and there's a reason why I left it, too. I'm not going to be in fights about it. Ain't no fight about it. We ain't arguing about it. I'm pastoring. Those who knows the word of God, they ain't. They're not gonna hang around very long anyway, being serious. They're not. But you've seen people who don't know any of the word of God come in and hear the passionate, knowledgeable, unadulterated Word of God. And it changed them. Even though they may not necessarily in their heart believe those things, they may not, you know, in their life believe those things. It changes them. As you go today, I pray that.
The Lord will bless you and keep you, that he'll make his face to shine upon you and that he will give you hope and peace today in Jesus name.
