This is Hope Alive, where we apply God's Word to our daily life. My name is Chad Harrison. I'm first a husband, a father, and a grandfather. Word of God, please speak to the hearers of your voice today in the name of Jesus. Amen. Well, good morning. Welcome to Lake Community Church's morning Bible study. We are in Joshua, chapter 19. We're finishing the chapter out, and what we're dealing with is Joshua's inheritance. And I think it's important that we kind of deal with this issue, especially in the context of this passage, because Bashar was given a city. He was given a city in the villages obviously around the city as an inheritance. It's right dead in the middle of isra. It's perfectly right in the middle of Israel. And that inheritance is given to him. And it was given to him according to the word of the Lord, meaning it came from God. It was instruction given to the Israelites by God to give him inheritance according to the word of the Lord. It says in verse 15, they gave him the city which he asked for Timnaserah in the mountains of Ephraim. And he built the city and dwelt in it. And he says these were the inheritance of Eleazar the priest, Joshua, son of Nun. And so you see that Joshua gets an inheritance. That's the primary understanding that you're getting from this passage. Now there is more understanding to be had from this passage, and it's an understanding that you really got to get into in the weeds and figure out there is a such thing as an inheritance, spiritual inheritance, meaning that you get to receive the spiritual blessings which your ancestors had. Okay. The Bible says when it's talking about the sins of the Father, right before the Ten Commandments, it says that the sins of the Father passed second, third generation, that's where we get the idea of generational curses or you get handed down issues that you have to deal with from your parents and your grandparents. Parents. And listen, that's not something that's really deniable. We know that some of it's genetic, some of it is, you know, has to do with lifestyle and living. Some of it has to do with the sin that is engaged in. We know that there's all kinds of things that you, you have to deal with as far as your parents and your grandparents. The things that you have to, you have to, to, to sometimes grow out of, sometimes directly confront. There's no doubt, there's no doubt that, you know, you're more tend toward alcoholism if your parents are an alcoholic. If you, if you grow up in a household that, that's drug abuse is going on, you're more likely to be a drug abuser. If your parents steal a lot. You, you, you have been taught how to do that and, and that practice gets carried on. If your parents are gossips, then you love to gossip. And it just goes on and on and on and on and on. And that's not what we're talking about. We're not talking about an anti spiritual inheritance this morning, but the next part of the passage says, but the grace of God's to a thousand generations. What does that mean? Well, that means when someone experiences God's grace, it gets passed down too. And it gets passed down to the generations that come after that, unto a thousand generations. Which means the grace of God's powerful enough to last forever. It's powerful enough to reach to all generations, to all peoples. It's something that is wonderful and powerful to deal with. Now inheritance is the passing on of the property that I have earned or I have attained in my life. Okay? And our inheritance law comes from scripture. I mean, it's almost directly from scripture. Okay? And our understanding of what inheritance is comes from scripture. It's the idea that, that you get the right to inherit what your parents or your ancestors desire to pass on to you. Okay? And so an inheritance is a property right that's passed on to someone else. It can be personal property, cars and things like that. It can be real property, which would be land and real estate. All these things can be passed on and they passed on by what we call. Now it's a testamentary document, what we call a will. And why do we call it a will? Because I will that my property goes to these people. It's literally a product of your desires, your will, your heart and so when we pass on property, that's what we're doing now. The grace of God is not passed on by your will, okay? It is passed on supernaturally. It's a spiritual blessing that gets passed on from the generations past to the generations future. Now you go, why am I talking about this? Well, Joshua got given a city. He was given a city because of his faithfulness, his obedience, his willingness to do what God had told him to do. God said, you're going to give him a separate inheritance that's his for him and the generations to come. Now you go, well, well, that must mean that there are a lot of generations after him that did a lot of things. And this city must have been a very important city in Israel. And all that is absolutely not true. It's false. It doesn't happen. Didn't happen at all. In fact, the city that Joshua founded and was his city, we're still trying to figure out, make sure we know where that is archeologically. They believe they found it, they believe they know where it's at and they believe they dug it up. But it really doesn't have any, it doesn't have any value past Joshua, past Joshua and the priestly class. It has no real value to them. And there's reason for that. You go, well, why did they give Joshua, Why did they need to give Joshua an inheritance? Because he was from the Levite, he was a Levite, and so he wasn't supposed to get inheritance, but God said, I'm gonna give him a special inheritance. And we know that that inheritance could be passed on. And it was passed on, but it has no value today. And it really didn't have any value to the ones who took it. Because listen to me, an inheritance, whether it be a physical inheritance, those things get burnt up easy and quick. I know so many people who receive an inheritance and within a year or two their lives are no better than they were before they got the inheritance. And a spiritual inheritance is the exact same way. It's the exact same thing. A spiritual inheritance, you get an anointing, you get an inheritance, you get a gift of grace passed down from you, from the generations before you who are faithful and who walk in faith. But that does not matter as to you, unless you engage that inheritance, unless you start walking in your obed and add that inheritance to it so that your obedience and that grace gift that's passed on to you from the generations past until you start walking in it, it really doesn't do anything for you. In fact, sometimes it can be A negative for you. And you go, what do you mean it can be a negative? Well, if you grew up going, being in church, you grew up seeing God move. You grew up hearing God's word. You grew up walking with a grandmother or a father, a mother, a grandfather who taught you, maybe a great aunt, maybe you know, somebody very special to you in your life. You grew up with them and they, they taught you those good things and they taught you those great things. And then you begin just to live like the world, just to live as the world would live. You just walk out what the world is doing. Okay, if you do that, if you do that, then not only do you get what happens when you live in the world which is the world is the valley of the shadow of death. You're walking in death. There's no life, there's no hope, there's only misery. But you also have the condemnation that the enemy will heap on you saying, well, your grandmother walked with God and look at you. Your dad taught you God's word and look how you're living. This happened for this family member and you're not getting any of it. So it's even at times is even worse. It would even be better that you didn't grow up in that inheritance because you're not walking in the grace gifts God's given you. You're not walking in the good things that God has passed on to you from the people who came before you. And you're not walking in the gifts God's given specifically and specially to you. And when we understand that, when we realize that we're walking in an inheritance that's given to us by God, an inheritance that first came from Jesus. He bought our inheritance with his blood. He has made us co heirs with him. Notice, an heir is the one who inherits the land. In fact, the word heir comes from inherit, okay? It's right there in the middle of it. We are those who inherit the gift of God through Jesus Christ, but we also inherit the grace of God given to those who came before us. We walk in that anointing, we walk in that power. Okay, but it doesn't. None of that matters. None of that matters if you don't walk in yours yourself. It's an added on blessing, a great blessing, a wonderful blessing, but it is an added on blessing. And if you don't learn to walk in it yourself, it is hard. I mean, it's going to be really, really hard for you to experience God in his fullness. You're just, you're, you're going to struggle with that. And, and, and, and it doesn't matter what your parents or grandparents did. It doesn't matter what came before you. If you don't walk in it yourself, you've got to walk in yours first. And then that anointing, that power, that, that gifting, that, that grace that God bestowed on them, it just gets kind of poured in as, you know, as the, as the icing on the cake, as it were, as we're in Thanksgiving season. I mean, it's the chocolate on top. It's the good stuff that really just is the knowing that God has always been moving on your behalf. It's the walking in those gifts and those grace. But you can't have the inheritance if you don't walk in it. Apparently, Joshua's ancestors didn't. They just didn't. They didn't do the things that would cause them to really enjoy the benefits of what Joshua did by faith in his life. And that really is a sad testament right here at the end of Joshua 19. It's one of those things that will really make you think about it. And, and what I would say to you is, is if you've got that inheritance, you ought to walk in yours fully. And you're going to see that it really is something special. For those of you say, well, I come from a family. Nobody knew Christ. Nobody walked in Christ. Well, you got to remember you're something new for, for God. You're, you're that, you're, you're that. You're that new branch that's grown out. You're, you're important. You're really important to God. And he always is. Like, he always loves to do a new work. He loves to dig new wells, as I. As it said in scripture, he likes to do, to engraft a new family into the kingdom of God. So you're, what you're doing is you're the first one to start building that inheritance for those to come after you. And so you got to remember that too, when you're walking with God, that you're not just effectuating yourself, that you need to make those investments into your family as well. Not just into your church, not into, just into your community, not just into your friends. But our investment that we're making into God needs, needs to have some avenue to be passed on. And look, you can't force your, your children, your grandchildren to accept and to believe and to trust in, in Jesus. But you sure can love them. Love them to that door. You sure can. You sure can walk in grace and walk in freedom and walk in love and help them see that door. They're going to have to open the door. They're going to have to. You know, the way to life is very narrow. In fact, it just goes through one person, and that's Jesus. They're going to have to walk in that way. He's the way. They're going to have to walk through that door. He's the door. But you sure can help them get to where the door is, and you sure can live it out and make that door as attractive on this side as it is on the other side. And you can pass your grace on by being a person of grace with those you love around you. And I think that's a great lesson to learn here, is that we need to be not only livers of God's grace, not only walkers of God's grace, not only doers of God's word, but. But we need to be those who deliver that to those who come after us so that they can experience in its fullness also. So I pray that that'll be the case for you. I expect it. I expect that when you walk in God's grace, you give it away all around you. You give it away as much as you can. And those who come after you, they have a responsibility to take it themselves. You can't make it, but you sure can make it more palatable and more possible. As you go. Today I pray that the Lord will bless you and keep you, that he'll make his face to shine upon you, and that he will give you hope and peace today in Jesus name.
